Víte, co obsahují laky na nehty? / Do you know what's in nail polish?

zdravím Vás v roce 2018. Trochu jsem se po Vánocích odmlčela a pracovala na tomhle dlouhatánském článku. 

Zajímaly jste se někdy o složení laků na nehty? Já vlastně ne, i když jsem věděla, že některé laky mohou obsahovat formaldehyd a že už podle zápachu soudě jsou laky plné chemikálií. K Vánocům jsem od manžela dostala knížku o „jedech“ v kosmetice (Doba jedová 3: Kosmetika), a tak jsem si řekla, že si zkontroluju, jak jsou na tom laky, které používám. Přeci jen se pro mě lakování stalo častou zábavou a chtěla jsem o případných rizikách vědět víc.

A tak jsem začala hledat, co všechno vlastně laky mohou obsahovat a jak nám dané látky mohou škodit. Když se člověk pídí po složení, dozví se, že se laky dělí do několika skupin podle toho, kolik škodlivých látek neobsahují na 3 free, 4 free, 5 free atd. Nikde jsem ale nenatrefila na seznam značek, které já používám, a jejich zařazení. V zahraničních článcích se dočtete hlavně o lacích, které třeba v ČR ani dostupné nejsou. A české články zase nejsou moc aktuální. Zaměřila jsem se teda hlavně na svoji sbírku a dala se do hledání informací o jednotlivých složkách. 

Nejlépe se mi hledalo na stránce EWG SkinDeep Cosmetic Database, kde se mi podařilo najít všechny hledané látky a jejich možné škodlivé účinky.

Nejhorší, co může lak obsahovat je už výše zmíněný formaldehyd a potom DBP a toluen.

Formaldehyd (metanal) je karcinogen, který se do těla dostává vdechováním, požitím a kontaktem s kůží. V malých množstvích nemusí být škodlivý, ale dráždí sliznici a citlivější jedince z něj bolí hlava.

DBP / dibutylftalát negativně ovlivňuje reprodukci – hlavně pokud jsou jeho účinkům vystaveny těhotné a kojící ženy. 

Trojici uzavírá toluen, který má narkotické vlastnosti, dráždí oči a dýchací cesty a tlumí činnost CNS. 

Můžeme být rádi, že žijeme v Evropě, protože naše legislativa použití těchto látek v kosmetice a potravinářství zakazuje. Pokud si ale objednáváte laky z jiných kontinentů, může se stát, že je tam výrobce přimíchá.

Dále existují laky 4 free, které neobsahují formaldehydovou pryskyřici a laky 5 free, ve kterých chybí formaldehydová pryskyřice/tosylamide a kafr, což jsou hlavně alergeny a při ne úplně častému vystavení jejich působení by neměly způsobovat větší potíže. Proto pokus si lakujete nehty v dobře odvětrané mísnosti, nemusíte mít velké obavy.

Při hledání jsem narazila i na epoxidovou pryskyřici, která se taky vyskytuje pod názvem tosylamide, takže je snadno zaměnitelná za tu formaldehydovou. Nikde jsem nenašla, že by měla zvlášť škodlivé účinky, ale obsahují ji hlavně lepidla, takže bych se jí opět vyhla hlavně v nevětraných místnostech.

No a teď už tedy k výsledkům mého zkoumání. Laky jiných značek jsem nestudovala, ale můžete si je zkontrolovat na stránce EWG.

• Born Pretty – já osobně od nich mám razítkovací laky a holografické laky. Složení jsem online nenašla, ale poslali mi mailem a bylo v pořádku = neobsahuje žádnou z výše zmíněných látek, za mě tedy 5 free.

• Bourjois – v pořádku, dá se najít online

• Catrice –  pořádku, za mě 5 free, složení se dá najít online po výběru barvy 

• China Glaze – složení najdete na lahvičce, bohužel většina laků je 3 free. Pár kusů mají 4 free, ale ve všech jsem našla kafr. Online jsem nenašla.

• Claire’s – v pořádku, za mě 5 free, složení je na lahvičče. Online jsem nenašla.

• Color Club – v pořádku – sami se prezentují jako 5 free, složení je na lahvičče. Online jsem nenašla.

• Cuccio – 3 free, složení je na lahvičče. Online se dá najít dokument se závadnými látkami.

• Dermacol – neonové laky jsou v pořádku, jinak je většina 3 free, ale najdou se i 5 free. Složení je na lahvičče.

• EBD – složení jsem nenašla ani na lahvičce ani online, ale přímo v eshopu deklarují 5 free 

• Essence – v pořádku, za mě naprostá většina 5 free – složení najdete online po rozkliknutí konkrétního laku

• Flormar – v pořádku, za mě naprostá většina 5 free – složení je na lahvičče. Online jsem nenašla.

• Gabriella Salvete – v pořádku, složení se dá stáhnout v pdf na stránkách - pod INCI

• Golden Rose – v pořádku, za mě naprostá většina 5 free – složení je na lahvičče. Online jsem nenašla.

• Jordana – glitters + texture v pořádku, za mě 5 free , složení se dá najít online po výběru odstínu

• Konad – v pořádku – sami se prezentují jako 6 free, složení je na lahvičče. Online jsem nenašla.

• L’Oreal – spíš 3 free – obsahuje epoxy resin / epoxidová pryskyřice - složení se dá najít online, ale i na lahvičce 

• LaLuxe – 3 free – složení je na lahvičče. Online jsem nenašla.

• Maybelline – minimálně 3 free, ale ne všechny jsou 5 free, složení je na lahvičce i online po výběru barvy se dá rozkliknout složení

• Miss Sporty – Glitters jsou 5 free, ostatní laky 3 free. Složení je online.  

• NaniNails.cz – 3 free i 5 free, složení se dá najít online, razítkovací laky mají složení i na lahvičce

• Nehtomania – razítkovací laky jsou 5 free, složení se dá najít na lahvičce nebo se dá poptat u prodejce

• Nubar – oficiálně 5 free, složení jsem našla jen na lahvičce.

• RdeL Young  – glitters jsou 5 free, složení ostatních laků se dá najít online, je třeba rozkliknout konkrétní odstín a stránky jsou pouze v němčině.

• Rimmel – spíš 3 free – obsahuje epoxy resin / epoxidová pryskyřice – složení se dá najít online po výběru barvy.

• Sally Hansen – spíš 3 free – obsahuje epoxy resin / epoxidová pryskyřice – složení se dá najít na lahvičkách i online 

• Starnails – razítkovací laky jsou v pořádku, složení je na lahvičkách, případně můžete poptat u výrobce

• Tasha – složení najdete na lahvičkách, nenašla jsem žádnou škodlivou látku

• Trend It Up – minimálně 3 free – obsahuje epoxy resin / epoxidová pryskyřice, ale záleží na odstínu. Složení se dá najít online.

• Yves Rocher Botanical – za mě 5 free, složení se dá najít online, ale je třeba rozkliknout konkrétní odstín.

Za mě tedy většina laků dopadla dobře. Pokud si nehty lakujete sporadicky nebo na dobře odvětrávaném místě, nebála bych se používat ani 3 free laky. Pokud je pro Vás ale lakování droga a nemůžete spát, pokud si nehty nelakujete několikrát týdně, radila bych poohlédnout se po 5 free kusech.

so this is my first post in 2018. I've been silent for a while, but I've spent a lot of time creating this looooong article for you. 

Have you ever wondered about nail polish ingredients? I did not, even though I knew some of them could contain formaldehyde, and that they all contain chemicals according to their smell. I got a book from my husband about “poisons“ in cosmetics (Stacy Malkan‘s – Not Just a Pretty Face Czech equivalent) for Christmas, so I decided to check how do the polishes I work with stand. I wanted to know more about possible risks because painting of my nails became a real hobby to me.

And so I started looking for what all the polishes could contain and what is their impact on our health. I learned that polishes are divided into several groups depending on how many harmful substances they  do not contain to 3 free, 4 free, 5 free, etc. Unfortunately, I haven’t came across brands that I use and their classification. In most articles, you can find lacquers that are not available in the Czech Republic. And a lot of articles in Czech are not up to date. So I focused mainly on my own collection and searched for information about individual components. I tried to find a website, that contains info about all of the ingredients used in nail polish and found the EWG SkinDeep Cosmetic Database. I was able to find there all the info I needed plus possible harmful effects.

Formaldehyde, DBP and toluene are the worst 3 ingredients the polish can contain.

Formaldehyde (methanal) is a carcinogen that gets into the system through inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. In small quantities, it does not have to be harmful, but it irritates mucous membranes and more sensitive individuals could suffer  from headaches. 

DBP / dibutyl phthalate adversely affects reproduction and is dangerous to pregnant and breastfeeding women.

The trio closes with toluene, which is a narcotic, irritates eyes and airways and can influence CNS function.

We can be grateful for living in Europe, because the legislation prohibits the use of these substances in cosmetics and food. However, if you order lacquers from other continents you have to check the ingredients.

Besides, there are 4 free varnishes that do not contain formaldehyde resin/tosylamide  and 5 free varnishes that lack formaldehyde resin/tosylamide and camphor. These two are considered as allergens and do not cause major problems when not used not frequently. Therefore, if you paint your nails in a well ventilated space, you do not have to worry too much.

While searching for the info, I came across epoxy resin, which is also known as tosylamide, so it can be easily confused with formaldehyde resin. However I couldn’t find what effect does it have on our health. But it’s also a glue ingredient, so I would again avoid it mainly in non-ventilated rooms.

Well, now for the results of my research. I have not studied other brands, but you can check the ingredients on the EWG page.

• Born Pretty – I only have stamping and holographic polishes from BP. I did not find the ingredients online but I’ve asked for them through mail and it was ok = do not contain any of the above mentioned chemicals, so for me they are 5 free.

• Bourjois – OK, ingredients to be found online

• Catrice – OK, 5 free according me, ingredients can be found online after choosing your color 

• China Glaze – ingredients are on the bottle, unfortunately most of them are only 3 free. A few is 4 free, but I found camphor in all. I did not find ingredients online.

• Claire's – OK, 5 free according to me, ingredients are on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• Color Club – OK – they are presented as 5 free, ingredients are on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• Cuccio – 3 free, ingredients are on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• Dermacol - neon lacquers are OK, otherwise most are 3 free, but some of them are 5 free. Ingredients are on the bottle.

• EBD – I did not find EBD ingredients on the bottles or online, but they declare they are 5 free.

• Essence – OK, for me the vast majority is 5 free - you can find the ingredients online after clicking on a particular shade.

• Flormar – OK, for me the vast majority is 5 free - ingredients are on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• Gabriella Salvete – OK, ingredients can be downloaded in pdf - click on INCI.

• Golden Rose – OK, for me the vast majority is 5 free ingredients are on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• Jordana – glitters + texture ok, according to me 5 free, ingredients can be found online - ingredients

• Konad – OK – are presented as 5 free, ingredients are on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• L'Oreal – rather 3 free - contains epoxy resin/tosylamide - ingredients can be found online but also on the bottle.

• LaLuxe – 3 free - ingredients on the bottle. I did not find it online.

• Maybelline – at least 3 free, some of them are 5 free, ingredients are on the bottle and also online after clicking on a particular shade.

• Miss Sports – glitter shades are 5 free, other lacquers are 3 free. Ingredients are online.

• NaniNails.cz - 3 free / 5 free, ingredients can be found online, stamping lacquers have ingredients on the bottle.

• Nehtomania – stamping polishes are 5 free, ingredients can be found on the bottle or you can ask the manufacturer

• Nubar – officially 5 free, I found ingredients only on the bottle.

• RdeL Young – glitters are 5 free, other lacquers ingredients can be found online. You need to click on a specific shade, page is only in German.

• Rimmel - rather 3 free - contain epoxy resin - ingredients can be found online after choosing the color.

• Sally Hansen – mostly 3 free - contain epoxy resin. Ingredients can be found on the bottle and online.

• Starnails - stamping polishes are fine, ingredients are on the bottles, or you can ask the manufacturer

• Tasha - ingredients are on the bottles, I found no harmful substance

• Trend It Up - at least 3 free – contain epoxy resin, but it depends on the shade. The ingredients can be found online.

• Yves Rocher Botanical - mostly 5 free, ingredients can be found online you need to click on a specific shade.

According to me, most of the polishes are good. If you paint your nails sporadically or in a well ventilated space, I would not be afraid to use 3 free varnishes. But if you addicted to nail painting and and you can‘t sleep without painting your nails twice a week, I would recommend to look for 5 free ones.
